Young Driver AMR take victory at 24 hours of the Le Mans

Thiim, Poulsen, Heinemeier Hansson take class win in iconic race

15.06.2014 - GTE

Young Driver AMR has reached it’s biggest success in motorsport yet: Kristian Poulsen, Nicki Thiim and David Heinemeier Hansson won the GTE-Am class of the 24 hours of the Le Mans, the most important endurance race of the world in front of 263.000 spectators, in their Aston Martin Racing entered Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin Vantage GTE. Poulsen/Thiim/Heinemeier Hansson won the GTE-Am class, the biggest class in this year’s race, with a margin of two laps.

Nicki Thiim started from third position on the grid and could take the lead at the end of the first hour for two laps, before he lost a few position during a safe approach in a brief rain shower during the second hour. Thiim and Heinemeier Hansson then fought back and gained position after position. At 00:42 in the morning in lap 130, Kristian Poulsen could take the lead from that moment onwards, the #95 maintained the first position until the finish in lap 334. The race didn’t went without a small heartbreak for Young Driver AMR. After Poulsen penultimate pit stop, two hours before the finish, the Aston Martin stopped on track on the out lap just a few hundred meters after pit exit. The now two times Le Mans class winner did a full reset of the electronic and got the Aston Martin going again. It was the only technical incident during the 24-hour race and after this moment, Poulsen brought the Aston Martin save to the finish line.

As a bonus, Poulsen, Heinemeier Hansson and Young Driver AMR extended their lead in the driver’s and team ranking in the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) with their Le Mans win.

Jan Struve: „Just a perfect day! Although we led for more then the half of the race, it was really exciting. You can never be sure at Le Mans, even if things look like they can’t go wrong, it was exiting until the last lap. A big thanks for the drivers who brought the car to the finish without any scratch and the team, who performed a perfect job in the pits. No unscheduled stop, just a perfect car and three great drivers. We raced in the spirit of Allan Simonsen and I think we really did him proud. This victory is for him.“

Nicky Thiim: „I drove in this race for the very first time and didn’t really know what to expect as a rookie. Everybody told me this is really big and can’t believe I go to this race for the first time and now I’m a class winner. Big thanks to my Co-drivers and the team for a perfect job. I really enjoy this victory.“

David Heinemeier Hansson: „The car was just phenomenal, we didn’t had any issues beside a very small hick up at the end. All three drivers didn’t make any mistake and stayed out of trouble. This is how you win Le Mans. Thanks to the entire crew who worked tireless and Jan Struve, who put the whole project together.“

Kristian Poulsen: „To return to Le Mans this year was especially though fort the team and everybody who knew Allan. After last year, I wasn’t sure I would ever come back and after my first laps on this track, I though it was a bad idea to return to Le Mans. But then we got with it and said we go out and win this race in the spirit of Allan. This victory goes to Allan and we will never forget him.”
